The Pittsburgh Steelers are known for their defensive excellence and that’s not just a reputation. This proves one of the special statistics of this century.
If you had to use one word to describe every NFL franchise, you could certainly argue the Pittsburgh Steelers earned the “Defense” label.
This black and gold uniform has been synonymous with brave defense for decades and generations. And when it comes to defense, everyone knows that a good dash of passes is essential.
These days, Pittsburgh has TJ Watt to set the tone defensively. But the reputation for reaching the middle predates the star defender.
The Steelers have the most bags of this century so far
Sunday Night Football has dropped a tweet proving the Steelers are the kings of access to quarterback this century.
No team has had more sacks over the past two decades than the Pittsburgh 986 team. The Eagles lag far behind with a score of 913.
Let’s put that into perspective. The Steelers could score zero sacks during the 2022 season and Philadelphia would still need to set a new NFL record for sacks in one season to tie things up. That means getting a sack more than ’84 bears at 72.
It’s not like Pittsburgh has had a bunch of outdoor seasons with a ridiculous sack total. They never actually had over 60 in one season.
The Steelers got there with steady production over many years with players like James Harrison and Cameron Hayward leading the way.
It’s an impressive achievement and should only grow if Watt continues to bring down his midfielders as if there is no tomorrow.
