Tigers make Yankees pay for stealing Miguel Cabrera’s chance in history

Leave it to the New York Yankees to spoil Miguel Cabrera’s chance of history.

While you can discuss movement strategy until the cows come home, the Detroit Tigers fans in attendance at Thursday’s game wanted to see history. Unfortunately, they will have to wait another day.

Miguel Cabrera He only needs one more base hit to join the 3,000 hit club. After going 3-for-4 on Wednesday, the future Hall of Famer entered Thursday afternoon’s competition with 2,999 career results.

The Detroit Tigers took a 1-0 lead over the New York Yankees heading into the bottom half of the eighth inning on Thursday afternoon. With James Candelario playing a double, the Tigers secured second and third place racers by two margins, and Miguel Cabrera came to the plate.

The Yankees deliberately walked Miguel Cabrera in the eighth inning.

With the fans in Comerica Park on their feet and Miguel Cabrera getting close to the hitter box, Tigers fans were ready to watch history. But after a brief visit to the hill, Aaron Boone made the unpopular decision to deliberately walk Cabrera in order to get to Austin Meadows.

Ostensibly, Boone made a clever “baseball” move. Austin Meadows, the left-handed hitter, has historically struggled against left-handed bowlers, and the Yankees had hit southern Lucas Lutge on the hill.

So, with the bases loaded and the first Lotji Stadium turned to Meadows into a center court, the Tigers scored two goals and advanced 3-0 in the ninth inning. The Yankees went into a double game to finish Game Nine and the Tigers walked away victorious.

While the Detroit faithful who were on the field may have felt cheated by watching history, Aaron Boone made a strategic decision that 99 percent of managers would have made. However, that doesn’t mean we have to love it.

History will have to wait at least another day as the Detroit Tigers host the Colorado Rockies at 7:10 PM ET tomorrow night at Comerica Park.
