NFL.com’s Jeffrey Chaddha reported Thursday morning that the Chiefs are not expected to trade for a wide receiver this off season. Whether it’s Samuel, DK Metcalf of the Seattle Seahawks, AJ Brown of the Tennessee Titans, or Terry McLaurin of the Washington captains, these four options “may all be long shots at this point.” Kansas City isn’t about to shell out top dollar here.

With the Chiefs already adding JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling in the NFL free agency, there simply isn’t enough money to roam in front of the Chiefs to trade for a third wide veteran future. By being patient and using any of the 32 top picks on a wide receiver, chiefs could theoretically have five years of control over a coveted future coming out of college.
Honestly, the first-round picks are getting undervalued for this reason. It’s becoming increasingly common for players selected on the second day of their NFL drafts to demand a new contract before even reaching year four. No doubt they get paid less for three years, but they will make more money than their first-round teammates who play in the fifth year option.
Admittedly, it’s not a complete lack at this point, but it’s definitely headed in that direction. As for what the Chiefs have to do, they should craft a wide receiver with a big upside with their first-round pick. This player could have tremendous potential to thrive or collapse, but if he doesn’t succeed in Kansas City, where will he succeed? For the money, is a logical step project.
Once the Chiefs traded Hill, they were immediately removed from the Samuel Sweepstakes.
