Matthew Stafford was at Comerica Park to get close to Miguel Cabrera for his 3000th hit.
Super Bowl champion Matthew Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams was at Comerica Park in person to see Detroit Tigers player Miguel Cabrera hit the 3000.
Prior to his last NFL season, Stafford spent his entire career outside the Georgia side of the Detroit Lions. Although he has been destined to be a quarterback since growing up in Highland Park, Texas, Stafford is a fan of baseball. He respects the game for the lessons you can apply to life in dealing with failure and overcoming adversity.
Here he is at the Tiger radio booth talking about the defining moment for Detroit baseball.
Matthew Stafford watches Miguel Cabrera get 3,000 hits at Comerica Park
While Stafford and Cabrera have become heroes elsewhere, they will always have a Detroit connection to bind them together. For years, they have been ambassadors for everything related to Detroit sports. While the city hasn’t had much success lately on the professional side of things, maybe Motor City’s Dan Campbell, Kid Cunningham and Yzerplan can save this town?
With Cabrera’s illustrious career clearly fading away, Stafford took a second wind in the final third of his life by switching NFC allegiances. Although not close to the first Cabrera ballot, the 30-year-old gunslinger still has time to build on a footballing legacy worthy of display forever in Canton. Will Stafford get a bronze bust like Cabrera gets a plaque?
Ultimately, no two Detroit players have meant more to the city in the past decade and change than Cabrera and Stafford. Although neither of them brought the city a championship, few would argue that they weren’t heroes at heart. While they got their rings in Miami and Los Angeles, it’s hard to think of Detroit locations in the 2010s and not think of those two.
It was great to see Cabrera reach 3000 and Stafford attendance was even better.
