Brian Gutkunst has a fitting excuse for failing to replace Davante Adams

Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst explained why he didn’t pick a wide receiver in the first round to replace Davante Adams.

The Packers haven’t drafted a wide receiver in the first round for 20 consecutive years, an astonishing feat for a team that includes two of the best quarterbacks in football history – Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers.

Surrounding Rodgers with guns has never been a problem, as he can often get the most out of bad situations. He knows this, but it doesn’t help matters that Green Bay replaced his career top target at Davante Adams earlier this season for a draft pick – choices they don’t seem to use to replace him.

Money played a pivotal role in Adams’ departure, and Rodgers chose to take the highway rather than express his displeasure directly.

“I’m sure Packer is going to wonder why we didn’t take a receiver or trade-off but at this point you just have to trust the organization…we’ll find a way in Matt’s attack to be as successful as we’ve always been,” Rodgers said.

It didn’t look like it was completely off the table, which is an improvement over years past. Instead, Green Bay added two Georgia producers in linebacker Quay Walker in 22nd and defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt in 28th.

While Gutekunst continues to ask questions about why he refuses to surround the best player in franchise history with more guns, Rodgers admitted he was surprised Adams traded in Pat McAfee’s bid.

“I thought based on the number we gave Davante and being able to play with me for a few more years would definitely make a difference, but .In the end Rodgers said.

Wish Adams the best in Vegas, too.

It has long been rumored that Adams and Rodgers discussed their future together as part of the latter’s decision to return to the Packers. In the end, the past few seasons for the No. 12 champion will come without his biggest goal.
