Although some fans may want him to start soon, the Pittsburgh Steelers won’t simply name Kenny Pickett as their starting quarterback.
Clearly, the Pittsburgh Steelers were interested enough in Kenny Beckett to go out and draft the quarterback for the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft. However, just because he was selected in the first round doesn’t mean Beckett will be the Steelers’ quarterback at the start of the season.
For now, it looks as though Mike Tomlin and the Steelers aren’t simply going to hand the starting quarterback job to the young quarterback.
Tomlin recently appeared on Rich Eisen Show. According to a tweet from Josh Carney, Tomlin apparently said he expected “fierce” competition for the middle role initially.
Mike Tomlin will make Kenny Beckett earn a start on Mitchell Trubesky
So, it looks like Beckett has to prove he’s ready for the job. That means the 23-year-old has to be better than the two quarterbacks who haven’t stunned anyone since they were both in the league.
27-year-old Mitch Trubesky has been in the NFL for a few years now. Drafted in 2017, Trubisky spent four seasons with the Chicago Bears, but was far from being a consistently strong quarterback while he was there. During those seasons, Trubisky threw 10,609 yards and 64 touchdowns for 37 interceptions.
However, some less than stellar moments and the perception that Trubisky didn’t raise the Bears’ chances of winning led him to become the reserve quarterback for the Buffalo Bills.
The third quarterback in the party-starter mix, the Steelers are familiar with the franchise. Mason Rudolph, who has been a reserve quarterback with Pittsburgh since 2019, will have a chance at becoming a starting player.
It will be interesting to see who comes first on top of this and if this individual is able to hold onto the starting role for the foreseeable future.
