An NFL insider predicts how long Deshaun Watson’s suspension will take

CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora has predicted when Deshaun Watson will return to the field for the Cleveland Browns after serving his impending suspension.

While the Cleveland Browns have been traded for Deshaun Watson this off season, don’t expect the former Houston Texans player and Clemson legend to play right away, as he will have to provide a suspension first.

Everyone and their brother know that Watson will be suspended by the NFL sometime this next season. He may have spent his final year in Houston, but Cleveland fully expects to waste a lot of time. How do we know this? Well, they signed a first-class backup into a free agency, not yet moved from Baker Mayfield and staged Watson’s new contract accordingly.

Jason La Canfora from CBS Sports Watson is believed to be playing fewer than eight NFL games this season.

NFL insider predicts how long Browns QB Deshaun Watson will be suspended

La Canfora does not believe the decision on how long Watson will be suspended will come even before the season begins. He expects the NFL to be on the cautious side of things here by imposing a stiffer penalty, rather than being open to criticism by not taking it seriously. Interestingly, he doesn’t think Watson will miss the entire football season either.

The league is lucky to know what happened to the diamond when it comes to Trevor Power. He was suspended by the MLB for two full seasons, plus lost half of the last campaign to domestic violence. Watson will likely be put into the equation all last year, but there is no reason to believe he will be playing in most matches for the upcoming football season.

Ultimately, suspending Watson for less than half a year would be a terrible show for the NFL. Then again, his all-season suspension as well as being absent for the entire past year might be seen as cruel, especially if he is acquitted of all charges related to the criminal side of things. As much as he’s missing eight or nine games, that’s probably more in line with what the NFL is thinking here.

La Canfora has come out on a limb to say it will be at least nine matches suspended, so we’ll see.
