One of the greatest things about softball in college is seeing crimes explode so many times. But is a mercy rule applicable to NCAA softball?
Due to the nature of the sport, college softball often features a regular barrage of home runs so that fans can enjoy it. It’s not always like this, but it’s not uncommon to see a lot of kicks being scored in a game as a result.
But, what happens if a team builds an absurdly large lead? How does the NCAA deal with some of that? Is there a rule of mercy in college softball?
Can you get a softball running referee in college?
Teams can absolutely rule and the rule of mercy is used fairly frequently in sports. There are a number of sheer powers that can go on for some very impressive scoring rounds to finish the game a little earlier than it would normally have finished.
What is the “eight-round rule” in NCAA softball?
According to the NCAA, the “eight-game rule” can end a game if one team leads the other after at least five equal rounds. The game must go through full turns unless the home team is up to eight runs in the lead while batting. Therefore, the home team can end the match after four and a half rounds if there was an injury that led the home team to advance in eight rounds.
The 2021 Oklahoma Sooners softball team had set an unrealistic record 56-4 by the time the season was over. Of those 56 Oklahoma wins, the Sooners have won 38 of them in games that have been cut short thanks to the Mercy Rule in effect.
