Rich Strike, who entered the Kentucky Derby to replace Ethereal Road, went on to win it all, and Twitter couldn’t believe it.
Race number 148 of the Kentucky Derby arrived on Saturday, May 7, and saw one of the biggest upheavals in the event’s long history.
The ethereal route was scraped from the race on Friday and was later replaced by the Rich Strike, which carried 80-1 entry odds on Saturday. Near the end of the race Epicenter was in the lead with Zandon getting closer to the lead. Then, Rich Strike appeared out of nowhere to take first and win the Kentucky Derby.

Watch Rich Strike win the Kentucky Derby
If you thought you were stunned by what happened from wherever you watched the race, these Twitter users can’t either.
Twitter users couldn’t believe Rich Strike won the Kentucky Derby
Rich Strike has the Kentucky Derby winning the second longest odds ever. The only horse that won the race with greater odds was Donerail, who had 91-1 dates back to 1913.
The runner-up finished second, followed by Zandon in third. The full finishing order can be viewed here.
The first stop of the Triple Crown is now in the books. Next stop will be Preakness Stakes on Saturday, May 21. Will Rich Strike be able to pull off another surprise at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, MD? One thing is for sure, Rich Strike likely won’t have 80-1 odds in this race.
