Is it time for the 11-20 Red Sox to give up the season? Not yet, and there are some names on the trading block who could help Boston get back into the playoffs
The Boston Red Sox had high hopes for the 2022 season.
They were knocked out two games from the World Championships last October. They won 92 matches. Their young stars like Xander Bogaerts and Rafael Devers are still at the height of their careers.
Somehow, just over a month into the season, things all went wrong. The Red Sox 11-20, already 11.5 games back to the New York Yankees in the Middle East, and even two from the humble Baltimore Orioles.
There is not a single problem that plagues the Red Sox. Their attack scored just 3.5 points per game, the third lowest in the league. It will be the franchise’s worst offensive performance since Dead Ball Era. Their staff on the field has dropped the most saved balls in the league.
It’s up to baseball chief Chaim Bloom to find a solution or risk watching any hope of a post-season dock slip away quickly. “We dug ourselves a hole. There is no doubt. We did not play well. Panic is not going to help. We have to play better,” Bloom said. MassLive.com this week.
There is a difference between urgency and panic. And I think we definitely need to show more urgency than we could have hoped to feel at this point in the season.”
Only twice in the past 50 years, 2020 and 1996, have the Red Sox started a poor season. It got to the point where there was talk of Red Sox Bogaerts . Possible Trading Before All-Star Shortstop hits free agency this winter. But that would be a sign of panic, which Bloom said the Red Sox would not do. Modern history supports it.
Just three years ago, the Washington Nationals started the 19-31 season. They could start a fiery sale and replace key players like Anthony Rendon, who, like Bogarts, was also a free agent after that season. Citizens did not. Instead, they added to their list, trading for Daniel Hudson. It was Hudson who, a few months after the Nationals showed up nowhere, was on the hill to score the last title of the franchise’s first World Championship.
Bloom and the Red Sox shouldn’t give up on 2022 just yet. There is still time to salvage something of the year and get back into the fray, but it does take some bold moves. Here are three players the Red Sox should consider trading for a change of season.
