The weekly dose of MMA highlights came early, courtesy of Jillian DeCoursey.
Jillian DeCoursey brought the MMA world into a frenzy on Wednesday night with a devastating KO against Lindsey VanZandt at Invicta FC 47. The KO came from a bad cross to VanZandt’s jaw causing her to fall on the canvas before a few extra shots to finish the deal.
Known as “The Lionheart”, DeCoursey improved to 5-3 as a pro with the win and certainly put the atomic weight division under observation with a hiatus. Although the UFC does not currently have this weight class, since its lowest level is the strawweight division, DeCoursey may find himself as a live UFC sign, DWCS participant, or TUF season member in the future.
This victory marked DeCourcy’s third win in her last five matches, while also losing a losing battle in the process.
Gillian Decoracy had an excellent performance on the amateur circuit
DeCoursey has quickly made a name for herself while starting her MMA career. Before becoming a professional, she won eight of her first nine fights. Victories included KO’s of Anastasia Bruce and the decision to beat VanZandt in December 2016.
DeCoursey has been a professional since August 2017 and has primarily won her fights by KO/TKO or decision so far. If you notice the main mixed martial arts promotion from this win, the rest of 2022 and 2023 could see the emergence of a new era of women’s mixed martial arts with the arrival of DeCoursey and her evil power in KO.
Only time will tell if that pays off, but with Invicta FC’s track record of bringing talented women prospects to the UFC, anything is possible.
