The Pittsburgh Steelers picked Kenny Beckett as No. 20 overall for a reason in the 2022 NFL Draft.

It’s a new era of football for the Pittsburgh Steelers with former Pete star Kenny Beckett at the center.

The Steelers took home number 20 overall in the 2022 NFL Draft with all intentions of him being the next face of the franchise. With Ben Roethlisberger just snapping the nails, Pittsburgh hopes the team doesn’t skip a win amid their quarterback system change. Beckett is coming off an exciting season at Pete. The question is whether he can hold a candle for Big Ben.

This is why the Steelers need to be everything when starting Beckett from the start of the jump in the first week.

3. The last thing the Steelers want is to open the door for Mitchell Trubesky

While there is reason to believe Mitchell Trubesky could pull off a quarterback for the Steelers, does Pittsburgh really want to open a can of worms with Beckett already on the roster? In a strange way, Beckett actually has a role in the Trubisky attack, as Steelers attack coordinator Matt Canada used to be employed by the former Pittsburgh Panthers.

So even if Trubisky learned the rules of the game fairly quickly because he’s a professional, the Steelers are too smart for the football team to put themselves in the dilemma of the Chicago Bears quarterback in the Matt Nagy era. Not starting Justin Fields immediately created more problems that the Bears would not have. Trubisky is better than Andy Dalton, but what’s the endgame in all of this really?

Sure, Trubisky is incredibly athletic and plays his best when a pocket collapses and has to scramble to the right. He can win matches with a defensive-minded team like the Steelers, but there is a limited ceiling on what he can do as a lane on the field. In the short term, the Steelers could win with him. In the medium term, potentially. But for the long term, it is not a sustainable model.

Unless Trubisky plays better than him in fall camp, Pickett should be the start of week one.
