Minnesota Twins short Carlos Correa came to the defense of teammate Byron Buxton, who received criticism from fans.
Buxton has a laundry list of injury history, so it comes as no surprise to those who know the team well that he took a few days off early in the season. The health of the outer star could determine the long-term outlook for the twins this year.
However, that didn’t stop some fans and critics from criticizing the team and Buxton for taking days off. Minnesota has tried to give Buxton one in three games to maintain his health.
May this be exaggerated now? certainly. But the twins would rather be safe than regret, because any illness that afflicts Buxton will severely affect their chances of winning the Al Central race.
The Twins: Carlos Correa understands Byron Buxton’s workload
“He’s a guy who wants to be there every day. When he’s on the field, he’s performed at the highest levels. He’s got 11 teammates already, he’s one of the leaders in the league. When you look at Byron and his knees early this year, it’s something to be wary of. And you have to take precautions so that he stays on the field. I’d rather get him for 120 out of a whole season than get him for 50 because he’s trying to do a lot,” Correa said, in the athlete.
When asked about some fans who don’t understand why the team is so careful with their star, Correa clearly stated that they probably don’t know the sport.
Correa is right on that aspect, with the twins playing 162 games this season. If they can get Buxton healthy for even 100 of them, that might be enough to earn a break point. Once October comes around, expect Buxton’s workload to increase.
But for now, it’s only May, folks.
