Cam Smith was looking forward to making a move on Saturday in the PGA Championship, but it’s hard to believe hitting another golfer with a disc drive was in his plans.
In the 2022 PGA Championship, one of the Southern Hills Country Club’s peculiarities is the proximity to the other holes. Yes, many of the courses we see often on the PGA Tour have fairways running parallel to each other and Southern Hills have that too, but there are tee-box crossings and greens throughout the Tulsa property.
While you might think those close encounters could lead to some wild events, it was the regular parallel passes and high winds on Friday that sent Cam Smith into a motor that hit fellow competitor, Aaron Wise, in the middle of the vicinity. Fairway.
There is no video of the drive itself hitting Wise, but you can see the image of the consequences at the top of this page. Furthermore, they discussed the incident on the ESPN+ broadcast, saying that Wise hadn’t actually spoken to Smith about what happened so as not to distract him too much from his tour.
PGA Championship: Cam Smith Drive hits Aaron Wise in the head on the right track
If you thought hitting a drive so bad that it bumps into another golfer on another fairway might not bode well for the tour, Smith turned that narrative on its head. He’s been playing a good, clean run on the scorecard and sitting 1-under through his first nine slots with no bores on the card.
As for Wise, he was clearly a bit shaken by that but continued his tour.
Suffice it to say that weather definitely plays a factor in Southern Hills and anyone who wins a PGA Championship might be the one to fight their best fight against it.
