The Steelers are approaching the next step in the long search for the next GM

No search for a general manager will be more comprehensive than what the Pittsburgh Steelers are doing to replace Kevin Colbert after 20 years in the job.

Sooner or later, the Pittsburgh Steelers will have a new General Manager to replace Kevin Colbert.

The outgoing General Manager has been in the position for two decades. He oversaw Pittsburgh’s winning of its two most recent Super Bowls. Although none of that has happened in the past decade, Colbert has been a big reason why the Steelers are so well-thought-out as an organization. So with him retiring from the profession after the 2022 NFL Draft, someone needs to replace him.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler provided an update on how the long and drawn-out search continues.

With Brandon Hunt being the last of six contestants known for a post-season interview, Pittsburgh should have its next general manager in no time. The question is who will end up?

Pittsburgh Steelers may have a new general manager before the start of next season

Hunt and Omar Khan are two strong internal candidates to watch. Pittsburgh also interviewed Ryan Cowden (Tennessee Titans), John Speke (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), Andy Weddell (Philadelphia Eagles) and former Buffalo Bills general manager Doug Whalley for the position. Weidl gained some traction, but there was always a chance that the Steelers would promote from within.

By putting up a wide network to interview a wide range of candidates, the Steelers can feel confident about who they will eventually hire as Colbert’s replacement. Although he’ll have big shoes to fill, jobs like these with the Steelers aren’t often available. This is the same franchise that has had three Hall of Fame coaches over the past 50 years at Chuck Noll, Bill Cowher and Mike Tomlin.

Ultimately, the Steelers earned the right to be as thorough and patient as possible to find the right candidate for the job to replace Colbert. They have to replace a Hall of Fame level team engineer, so they can’t leave any stone unturned in this hiring process. Although his successor will not be him, the Steelers are counting on finding someone close to Colbert.

Here’s to the Steelers to find their next general manager before the rubber toe meets rubber in September.
