New York Yankees fans booed Tim Anderson as he climbed onto the control board in Game Two of their double header on Sunday, May 22.
The May 21 game between the Chicago White Sox and the New York Yankees will not be remembered for the actual game itself. Instead, it will be the words that third Yankees baseman Josh Donaldson said to White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson. After the match, Anderson said Donaldson named him Jackie Robinson, which was confirmed by the Yankees’ third team captain.
One day after the incident, Anderson took the lead with the Chicago team in Game Two with his double-header, and was greeted by fans at Yankee Stadium with boos.

In the match the day before, there was a bench release incident after Donaldson and hunter Yasmane Grandal exchanged words. Anderson approached and his teammates had to block him. That’s when Anderson said after the match that Donaldson said “What’s the matter, Jackie”.
Donaldson confirmed he said so, but cited an interview Anderson gave Sports Illustrated in 2019 in which he said he felt like “Jackie Robinson today.” Donaldson said it was an inside joke with Anderson, saying he said it back in 2019 when he was a member of the Atlanta Braves. He said he apologizes if Anderson feels offended and is open to meeting him.
White Sox confidant Liam Hendriks shared his thoughts on Donaldson’s comments, saying the inside jokes are with people getting along with each other before calling the third baseman’s statement “complete bulls.”
Yankees coach Aaron Boone said before the first game of the double-header on Sunday that while he didn’t feel Donaldson had any malicious intent, he made Jackie’s comment “somewhere he shouldn’t go.”
MLB is investigating the incident.
