Tyler Mahley’s deal the Reds can’t refuse

The St. Louis Cardinals need a monument, and that’s pretty obvious. With Jack Flaherty on his way back, that would be a boost. But for now, it’s Adam Wainwright and it doesn’t help much. Could Tyler Mahle be the answer?

Wainwright has held the St. Louis rotation at times this year, particularly due to Flaherty’s injuries and free acquisition of Steven Matz.

Even with Flaherty returning sometime in June, the cards’ backend might use some work. St. Louis traded the likes of JA Happ and Jon Lester on Deadline last season for a reason. That’s inappropriate, they didn’t do all that much either to keep it.

Robert Murray, a FanSided MLB Insider stated that he is surprised if St. Louis are among the finalists for Frankie Montas, as the asking price of A is too high for them. Reds rival Tyler Mahley might make more sense from a compensation standpoint.

Cardinals: Tyler Mahley’s Rational Trade

Mahley has one year of refereeing left after this season, so the Reds might buy two of the top 20 potential teams, at best. As another Mahl enters his start (which is going well for him, maybe add) With the ERA close to six, St. Louis to be able to afford it without giving up a high probability.

Cardinals Get

Tyler Mahley

Reds get

Zach Thompson

Delphine Perez

Julio Rodriguez

For Mahle, the cards will have to give up three possibilities, all ranked in their top 30, but none in the MLB top 100. That should be considered a win.

Thompson is ninth on the team, and he could be production ready at the MLB level. He is 24 years old and is said to have not been looked at for a Bulls spot right now. Perhaps the Reds will find a place for their 40 players to contribute immediately.

Perez is a shortstop, and is ranked in the top 20. Given the number of short stops that are ranked higher than him in the Cardinals system, it makes sense for St. Louis to tackle from a position of strength. Still, shortstop is always a valuable prospect position.

Finally, Rodriguez is considered a potential catch. St. Louis already has future catcher in Evan Herrera, and Rodriguez is close to MLB level at the age of 24. At a losing team like Cincinnati, he could get a chance to show what he’s got.
