The 2022 NBA Finals will be contested between the teams left behind by Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving in Summer 2019.
The 2022 NBA Finals are scheduled after Sunday night. The Boston Celtics defeated the Miami Heat 100-96 in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals to advance to the NBA Finals. Their opponent will be the Golden State Warriors, who reached the finals for the first time since 2019 after beating the Dallas Mavericks in five games.
With the finals and first game set for Thursday, June 2, it cannot be overlooked that the two rival teams are the same organizations that Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving left in the summer of 2019.

The summer of 2019 was big for the NBA, as the free agency category piled up. Notable among her titles were Durant and Irving. Durant has spent the past three years with the Warriors, winning two NBA championships. As for Irving, he had a turbulent two-year stint with Boston.
Durant and Irving decided that they would work together to increase the odds of competing for the NBA championships. As for their team, they have decided to sign deals with the Brooklyn Nets.
It wasn’t their first official season together as a duo, with Durant missing the entire season due to recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon. The window for real competition opened once Durant returned for the 2020-21 season.
The Nets have taken steps to boost their push to the 2021 Finals, bringing in James Harden via trade to build a superhero team. While they defeated the Celtics in five games in the opening round, they were eliminated in seven against eventual NBA champions, the Milwaukee Bucks.
Last season saw an early end to their season. The team has handled Irving’s missed matches at home for the majority of the campaign to New York State for a COVID-19 vaccine, due to her unvaccinated. Not only that, but they traded Harden for the Philadelphia 76ers. Once the playoffs arrived, the Nets were the first team eliminated, as they were overrun by Boston.
It took a while, but the Celtics are in the NBA Finals. As for the Warriors, they have missed the playoffs in the past two years, suffering injuries to their superstars. Now, in their first year after returning in good health, they have reached the finals for the sixth time in the past eight seasons.
In hindsight, leaving their teams in 2019 didn’t result in Durant and Irving. But, we’ll see what happens with the duo this season to see if they come close to competing for the Larry O’Brien award.
