Nonito Doner looks forward to once again becoming a unified champion

Naoya Inoue Nonito Donaire faces off at Bantamweight Unification on June 7 on ESPN+.

This Tuesday, live from Toeiko, Japan, and on ESPN+, WBA and IBF Heavyweight Champion Naoya Inoue (22-0) went up against WBC Champion Nonito Donaire (42-6). This is the second time these two have met, with the first fight being an all-time classic that took place in November 2019. While both men have faced some opponents since the last fight, this match is what they have been looking forward to since the battle scorecards have been read. First.

WBC champ Donaire recently checked in with Ak & Barak from “The DAZN Boxing Show” while having a laid-back personality, knowing he’ll have to change switch when he meets Inoue in a few days in order to rematch. Donner was upfront about his first fight with Ino because he felt there was a missed opportunity to beat ‘The Beast’ the first time they met again in 2019. After I felt like I could defeat him next time, Donner told Ak & Barak. I went straight back to the drawing board. I spent a week or two and then went straight back to the gym. It’s been on my mind ever since.”

Donner continued, “I came in there fighting without a game plan. It was like I was trying to bully the kid (Ino), and he was so strong. He was tough and I didn’t expect him to. He could crack too. Last time I came with just a fight mentality but this time I’m coming with everything.” There were also some glove issues that landed him in his game. Donner told Ak & Barak, “I got punched, but this time, we both get there with drill gloves. In the last fight, my Everlast gloves, through packing and delivery, arrived rotten. I couldn’t use my gloves, so I had to to use his secondary gloves.”

Naoya Inoue vs.Nonito Donaire will be streamed live on ESPN+ June 7

This comeback means more for Donner as the 39-year-old has been drinking from the Fountain of Youth for some time. So, what motivates him at this point in his career? “I’m driven to hit that kid (Ino) and be undisputed. That’s the one thing I don’t have on my resume,” Donner said. His wife Rachel stated there was no rematch clause, and Donner’s win meant they were “moving to the next stage.” Donner still has goals and things he wants to achieve before thinking about doing anything other than fighting.” When all is said and done, I’ll definitely go for the unchallenged belt; Put all the belts together. “
