Pete Alonso and Starling Mart left Tuesday night’s game due to injuries. How much time will they miss?
Each of the senior Sladeen players in the New York Mets squad exited last night’s game with injuries in the second half.
Martin injured himself in a steal attempt while slipping into second base, and left the match after half a run with a tight left quad. Alonso was hit on his right hand by a strong dive from Padres Yo Darvish. Both players are expected to miss at least some matches.
After the match, manager Buck Showalter was asked if he thought the two players would be back in the squad within the next few days and he replied with a short, ominous message.
“I love your optimism, but I don’t share it at this point.”

Fortunately for Mets fans, Alonso’s X-rays came back negative so there is no broken hand, which means the short absence is a real possibility for the 27-year-old starting player.
However, Marte is scheduled to have an MRI on his left quadrant sometime today which is a safe bet to land on the injured list in the coming days according to MLB insider John Heyman.
These injury updates come at a bad time for the Mets as they already have three top-tier players on IL in Jacob deGrom, Max Scherzer and Tylor Megill. Backstop James McCann also has a wrist injury that will likely keep him out from May to the end of June or even July.
Should Alonso land on the injured list, the Mets have a few inside options to replace him including the often used bench racket JD Davis as well as recently reduced Dom Smith, whose primary defensive position was first base.
Replacing Marte might be a little more difficult if he trips to the injured list, but the Mets have Nick Plummer on their current active roster and they have some 40-player options in the minor leagues at Khalil Lee and Mark Ventos. Smith mentioned above.
