Joanna Jędrzejczyk leaves her gloves in the octagon and retires after losing her UFC 275 match against Zhang Weili.
Joanna Jędrzejczyk has been a fixture in the UFC’s women’s strawweight division. Jędrzejczyk has served as the division champion for more than two years, and has successfully defended the title five times, an especially impressive feat when it explains the fact that no other woman has successfully defended the title more than once.
Jędrzejczyk started her MMA career in 2012 with SFT, winning her first match by decision. She didn’t lose her first match until 2017 when Rose Namagunas finished it off to the floor, ending each of her 14 winning streak and impressive run with a UFC straw belt. The last two years of her career were certainly not as impressive as the first half of the decade, but she marked one of the best fights in UFC history in her debut match with Zhang Weili.
Jędrzejczyk has been one of the most dominant women in the company for nearly eight years with the UFC. That eight-year stint and nearly 20 years of MMA career officially ended at UFC 275, when Jędrzejczyk dropped her gloves in the ring and announced her retirement.
UFC fighters provide respectful messages and good wishes to the former UFC strawweight champion
Jędrzejczyk’s influence on the UFC, women’s combat sports, and MMA as a whole is immeasurable, and her career has paved the way for the many women who are fighting today for a podium. The end of a special career like this brought many of the biggest names in the UFC to exchange congratulations and good wishes for the former strawweight queen.
