Emmys 2022: The Contestant Directors Who Never Won

These directors, who have never won an Emmy, may finally get a chance to be nominated and possibly win this raucous series.

Karen Kusama
It’s been 20 years since Kusama made her directorial debut, but she has yet to receive an Emmy nomination. The “Jennifer’s Body” director posed behind the camera in the pilot episode of this year’s edgy drama “Yellowjackets” on Showtime.

Lauren Scafaria
Best known for writing and directing 2019’s “Hustlers,” Scafaria led the seventh episode of the final season of HBO’s massive success, “Succession.” Titled Too Much Birthday, the heart-wrenching episode centered on Kendall’s lavish 40th birthday party can – and should – earn an appreciation for Stephen Carter’s production design.

Sherine Daibes
Dabis is on top of the seventh episode of Hulu’s “Just Murder in the Building,” completely titled “The Boy from 6B.” The clock moves the puzzle and tells the dramatic story of James Caverly Theo Dimas, a deaf resident of the building; In order to fully capture Theo’s perspective, the episode was almost completely silent.

Declan Chromatic
In the second season of “Ted Lasso” on Apple TV, Lowney directed both the Christmas episode, “Carol of the Bells” and the finale, “Inverting the Pyramid of Success,” which certainly deserve recognition. Written by Joe Kelly and Jason Sudeikis, the brilliant final episode highlights more than ever the importance of choice.

Mike White
It’s hard to believe White wasn’t nominated, but it’s likely for the HBO smash “The White Lotus.” He wrote and directed all six episodes, and while each episode shines, the finale—and the murder scene in particular—takes a very specific eye.

Michael Showalter
Somehow, Showalter didn’t actually hold an Emmy, but this could only be the year he directed four episodes of Hulu’s “The Dropout.” The fourth episode titled “Old Men White Men” serves as the halfway point for the series; Showalter finds a way to highlight both Walgreens’ deeply embarrassing story with Stephen Fry’s Ian Gibbons’ more emotional moments.

Emily Mortimer
While she may be best known for her acting, Mortimer wrote and directed all episodes of the British romantic drama The Pursuit of Love this year. Based on Nancy Mitford’s 1945 novel of the same name, the series spanned three episodes and starred Lily James, Dominic West, and Emily Beacham.
