With star defensive player Mickey Bates currently injured, the Dodgers traded for some depth on the field, which is essential.
Tracee Thompson, a former Dodger, was readily available. He wasn’t getting an MLB chance with the Detroit Tigers.
So, the Dodgers made the call.
Thompson will have that opportunity with Los Angeles, at least for a moment, where he will excel as a right-handed hitter in a familiar environment. Trayce had 1,085 OPS in Triple-A at the time of the said transaction.
For Detroit, this deal was all about money. Thompson wanted out, and Detroit wasn’t about to let him get away for nothing. So, they took whatever vending machine L.A. was able to throw their way. Heck, the Dodgers aren’t short on money.
Dodgers find Mookie Betts a short-term alternative
Thompson earned 17 home runs in Triple-A Toledo this season before moving to Los Angeles. The Dodgers rely on that strength that is back at the MLB level.
However, his main problem was the strike. Thompson made it out more than a quarter From MLB at bat. At a certain point, only the force could take him away.
As a short-term acquisition, Thompson makes sense. He wouldn’t hit near the top of the lineup, nor should he. Still, it’ll give Los Angeles some pop as they try to walk in the water without one of baseball’s top hitters in the lineup.
