The New York Mets need to make a promotional addition before the trade deadline, even with Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom ahead.
New York may be close to finally taking that step.
While they have been playing Reds’ Luis Castillo for some time now, the latest momentum between the two teams suggests a deal could be reached. Better late than never, right?

New York can’t count on injured superstars like Scherzer and Degrom to carry them the rest of the season. Even with the likes of Chris Bassett, the Mets’ turnover has its flaws. You can never have too many novice shooters.
Can the Mets buy Luis Castillo from the Reds?
New York’s calls to Cincinnati are twofold. First, they have a clear interest in Castillo. He’s a legitimate ace at AL Central, and he could make a difference in Queens. This season, he is 2-4 with a 3.71 ERA.
However, New York could also handle the likes of Tyler Mahle, if only a little cheaper. Steve Cohen doesn’t mind showing off, but with so much money already invested in the rotation, there’s no need to trade-in the entire farm system for either player.
The Mets also maintained an interest in the likes of first-class rookie Frankie Montas, who put in a near-batting display on Thursday.
Needless to say, New York has options. But the option to stay on August 2 could kill them, if they go that route.
