Jerry Rice picked a side in Jimmy Garoppolo’s debate against Tre Lance when it came to who should be the San Francisco 49ers starting quarterback going forward.
When it comes to who should start under the San Francisco 49ers quarterback, Jerry Rice thinks the man should be Tre Lance over Jimmy Garoppolo.
Perhaps Rice just wanted to get a scrambled or scratch-off ticket at his local shop, but when KSBW put a camera and mic in his face, the 49ers’ legendary wide receiver answered the call just fine. 2022 will be the second season of the NFL for the Lance outside North Dakota, while Garoppolo may have already been traded had he not had off-season shoulder surgery.
“Tree Lance, I think he’s ready to go,” Rice told KSBW. “I think he’s incredible because he has that side that Jimmy is [Garoppolo] She doesn’t have, and that’s the threat of running with the ball and stuff like that. His movement, his strong arm. This guy is ahead of his time. He’s a little kid, but he’s so experienced and I think he’s ready to go.”
Is Rice right in his reasoning, or is he a good soldier embracing the inevitable with the 49ers?

a look. From the goodwill ambassador’s point of view, this is the right call for Rice. The 49ers will be rolling with the Lance this season, as they look to trade Garoppolo sooner rather than later. San Francisco has given up its major venture capital move to No. 3 to take Lance out of North Dakota in the 2021 NFL Draft. They also picked him ahead of Justin Field and Mac Jones…
Regarding Rice’s claim that Lance has a stronger, more mobile arm than Garoppolo, he’s absolutely right. Again, that’s why the 49 who gave up on the farm seem to get it. Regarding Rice’s other claims that he’s “very experienced” and “he’s ready to go”, let’s put a pin in the balloon and blow that bad boy really fast, shall we? This is why moving from Garoppolo is risky.
Although they were both standout FCS players, Garoppolo had more team and professional experience than Lance. He starred in Eastern Illinois for years before supporting Tom Brady in New England, and that was before hitting San Francisco mid-season in 2017. Lance basically has one year of FCS-level college football under his belt at this point.
Given that Kyle Shanahan’s offense is so complicated, who would say Lance is better equipped to run this thing into his second professional season? Sure, Shanahan will be cutting back on the rules of the game to help bring the Lance together, but the 49ers could be candidates for a major regression this fall, based on a midfield changeover. In the long run, it might work, but it could also be Jordan’s love.
Ultimately, the 49 members of Lance were heavily cast into believing that he could be the next Josh Allen or Carson Wentz. Newsflash, there is no next Josh Allen. In terms of Wentz comparisons, yes, they share the same league, but Wentz works through teams like the late Larry King who has made wives for the past three years. If he bombed in Washington, Wentz’s NFL career as we know it might be over.
While it does serve Rice to be a huge believer in Lance, he has proven nothing on a professional level.
