Boston Red Sox fans are horrified that Juan Soto has an affinity for one of their city’s teams.
Washington Nationals star Juan Soto may not hit unrestricted free agency for a few more years, but Boston Red Sox fans are scoffing at the idea that he’s playing for Fenway after his latest suspension.
When asked about his favorite sport besides baseball, Soto admitted that he is a big fan of the NBA, noting that he recently bought Al Horford and Jayson Tatum Boston Celtics jerseys. Soto has two more years to judge his deal with Nationals, but can he realistically leave the nation’s capital for Boston before his unrestricted free agency rises in 2025? Citizen fans should hate this.
The Celtics could see their championship window close by then, but Soto to Boston is intriguing.

Boston Red Sox fans must love Juan Soto’s surprising connection to the city
This is the Dominican player’s fifth season in the big league. He made his debut with Washington when he was aged 18 in 2018. Soto has already won the world championship in his five years with the Nationals. Despite being a better player, Washington is in the second year of what appears to be a painful rebuilding process. He may feel loyal to the privilege and may want to get rid of this thing, but he can walk.
Assuming he has his health and plays to his lofty standards, Soto will be making all the money in the world during 2026 MLB Free Agency. We’re talking about a player who got something ridiculous like a 15-year contract worth over $400 million. Washington may have the upper hand to retain his services, but citizens have to show they can roll out a winning product within a year or so.
In theory, Boston would be in a mixed bag to sign a player like Soto should he reach free agency. The Red Sox have a year or two on, but they’ve been a competitive team for most of their history. They’ve also shown a historical willingness to pay big money to bring stars into their franchise. Their most recent acquisition was Trevor Storey over Colorado.
There’s still a long way to go, but Soto’s love of the National Basketball Association could play a role in his signing with Boston.
