3 things you missed from Thursday night’s game

The Boston Red Sox lost their series premiere to the New York Yankees at Fenway Park Thursday night. With a long weekend approaching, here’s what you missed:

Gerrit Cole was dominant over all but Raphael Devers, who owns the same man and at least 10 percent of his nine-year, $324 million salary.

While the Ace Yankees are usually defiant in their antics, at this point all they can do is admire Devers, who can be a free agent in a few seasons:

“He was able to hit everything. I mean, there was no mistake. Rolling once. Off the line once. I mean, you’re supposed to fail 7 out of 10 times at this gig. I don’t know what the deal is,” Cole said.

While New York was able to hold their 6-5 win, all of those rounds in Boston were lost by Devers, who had two at home on the night as well.

Red Sox: Rafael Devers deserves the bag

If there was any doubt that Devers deserved to be paid, his performance on Thursday night served as a reminder. While Xander Bogaerts could undergo a position change, and is close to the 30-year-old’s other side, Devers is undoubtedly a top priority in Boston going forward.

If the Sox was smart, they would of course keep both. But the Fenway Sports group is behaving in mysterious ways.

Devers will likely be an All Star in this season’s midsummer classic. The numbers support that, because after Thursday he cut .330/.387/.598 with an OPS of .986. Pair that with his raw strength numbers (19 home games, 58 RBI) and 106 league-leading successes and 27 folds, and it’s easy to see why Chaim Bloom and the Boston front desk think Cap Devers is the league’s top potential player.

Yankees: Aaron Judge injury update

After the Yanks won 6-5, Judge made it clear that he wouldn’t miss another game in the series.

“Just precautionary things,” The judge said.

okay then. The AL MVP favorite said he’ll be back in the squad for Friday night’s game at Fenway Park, too.

Even Red Sox player Josh Winkowski, who suffered defeat in the first game, understood that facing an amazing New York squad without the likes of Judge or Anthony Rizzo is very different from the full force.

“I think Rizzo and Judge lengthened the lineup. I wouldn’t say the guys out there today are bad, anyway, but it looked like another big league lineup, to be honest,” Winkowski said.

Friday night will be the real deal. Fortunately for Winckowski, he’ll be watching from the bunker.

2022 Yankees still at historic pace

According to ESPN statistics and information, the Yankees are aligned with the 1998 team, which won the World Championship. If this version of the Bronx Bombers could do the same, Aaron Boone would be a happy man.

The Yanks had some real legends about it, but so does the 2022 iteration.

In 20 years, what will we think of the likes of Judge, Cole and Giancarlo Stanton? Sure, some are heading to Cooperstown in the coming decades.

Many doubted this Yankees headed into the season after they passed the likes of Carlos Correa and Freddy Freeman during the holiday season, and instead went (what many felt) to more modest promotions.

That’s why you guys are fans, and I’m a writer. Brian Cashman probably knows what he’s doing after all.
