The Atlanta Braves missed a gem thrown by Spencer Strider after Will Smith entered the game and put the team 1-0 down against the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Atlanta Braves were coming off a hot month of June that helped them come within close range of the New York Mets to finish first in the NL East. July has been quite a good month since the Braves actually played the first three games of their four-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals. On July 7, they had the opportunity to secure a four-game sweep with a win.
Atlanta had Spencer Strider on the hill, pitching an absolute gem against the Cardinals. With six goal-free innings, Strider hit 12 hitters and only allowed two hits. However, manager Brian Snitker decided to go with Will Smith in the seventh inning, and the Cardinals immediately took the lead.
Brave: Will Smith destroys the jewel of Spencer Strider
In Smith’s second pitch of the match, he surrendered to Nolan Gorman twice. On the next hit, Dylan Carson hit one on a volley to second base. Next, the veteran Cardinal hit Gorman in a sacrifice fly to give them a 1-0 lead.
Smith then threw a wild tone that allowed Carson to advance to third. But he was able to prevent more damage by making Edmundo Sosa and Austin Romijn hit the swing in the next two hits.
Strider wouldn’t win, but he made some history. According to ESPN Stats and Info, he is the first modern-day MLB rookie to hit 11 hitters or more and allow two hits or fewer in consecutive games. On his previous start on July 2 against the Cincinnati Reds, Strider scored 11 strikes and succumbed to one in a 4-1 win.
The Braves tied at the bottom of the seventh game at home by Michael Harris II.
