Brave: Death of Dwight Smith, member of the 1995 World Championships
Smith made 103 appearances for the Braves in the 1995 season, cutting 0.252/.327/.412 by three home runs and 21 regular season RBI in less than 150 games. On his way to the World Championships, though, he did well in a spot role for Atlanta, going 3 for 7 with a double and an RBI as he helped the club get a ring.
After that race to win the World Championship, Smith was initially drafted by the Cubs in 1984 and debuted in 1989. He went on to finish second in the NL Rookie of the Year vote that season and spent five seasons with Chicago. After jumping in in 1994, he spent two seasons with the Braves before retiring after the 1996 campaign.
As the organization reported, Smith is survived by his wife and three children, including Dwight Jr., who was a first-round pick by the Blue Jays in 2011 and was in the White Sox minor league system earlier this season before being released in May.
Smith will miss about Trust Park and the Braves organization.
