Cubs hunter Wilson Contreras will likely play his last home game at Wrigley Field on Tuesday, as he said an emotional farewell to his teammates and fans.
Tuesday’s win at Wrigley Field was a bittersweet experience for the Cubs fans.
They watched their team beat the Buccaneers, 4-2, thanks to an RBI duo from Ian Hap and Nico Horner and a home run from Seiya Suzuki.
But they also watched catch Wilson Contreras bidding farewell to the faithful in his hometown.
Cubs trade chip Wilson Contreras says goodbye to his teammates, a Wrigley believer
“I love you all. Thanks for everything. Thank you for everything you have done for me and my family,” Contreras said. “I have a lot of good relationships with some friends from Chicago. I am sure I will love him forever. Thank you for everything. I wish I could play for you guys, but this is work and I understand that. I love you all.”
Contreras gave a long hug to his teammates, including Ian Hap in the dugout.
The catcher didn’t necessarily play his last game for the Cubs, who are headed on a road trip to San Francisco before the August 2 MLB trade deadline. Contreras must have a new home.
Where might it land? The Rays have been linked with the catch, especially after losing Mike Zunino to end-of-season surgery. The Mets appear to be a major player in the trade talks. The Yankees and Astros could participate, too.
The clock is ticking to get something done before the deadline. It is not a question of whether the trade will continue or not. But a farewell from Wilson at Wrigley confirms he’s landing somewhere next week.
