Jeff Bassan, a senior MLB insider at ESPN, gives Juan Soto’s trading odds and what would prevent that from happening.
The deadline for the MLB trade is next Tuesday, August 2, and the main focus will be on whether the Washington national team actually moves on from defense star Juan Soto. It all came after 15 years, and Soto turned down an offer of $440 million.
While appearing on “The Dan Patrick Show,” ESPN’s top MLB insider Jeff Bassan was asked what odds he would give the Nationals before the deadline. Bassan said a probability of 80-20 but says that if Nationals General Manager Mike Rizzo “continues to stick to the requirement to bring it up to teams,” he feels Soto remains in place.
You can listen to Passan’s comments in the tweet below, which also includes a YouTube link to the full interview.
MLB Insider Jeff Bassan gives Juan Soto’s trading odds
It was reported in the weeks leading up to the trade deadline that citizens had a high asking price for Soto. Bassan says Rizzo was asking for “125 percent of Soto’s value,” which is between five and six “best odds”.
Bassan says that if Rizzo lowers his asking price, he could see San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers as “the most likely landing sites.” It also lists the St. Louis Cardinals and the Seattle Mariners as potential teams.
Rizzo let him know that he wanted the highest value imaginable for Soto. He even revealed during a recent radio appearance on 106.7 The Fan in Washington, D.C. that he had no interest in including a bad contract in Soto’s trade because he didn’t want to “dilute” the yield.
Soto is under contract for another two seasons before hitting free agency, so there is time for the Nationals to wait for a commercial that they feel is appropriate. However, fans will look at 80 percent odds and see who will be able to close the deal by the deadline.
