The Tampa Bay Rays have been traded for left-football player David Peralta of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
In a pre-MLB trade deadline deal, the Tampa Bay Rays secured a powerful hitter in their court after several injuries dented their attack. The Diamondbacks were looking to sell David Peralta after spending nine years with the team for a variety of reasons.
It’s about to be a free agent, and this helps to free up roster space for younger players, and also gives Peralta a chance to take part in the playoffs again. The 35-year-old has made the playoffs only once, in 2017, with D’Backs since his debut in 2014.

Peralta is a fan favorite of the Diamondbacks known as the Freight Train. This is partly due to the fact that he has reached 46 triples since 2014, the second most in Dbacks history. This year, Peralta has been successful more than 23% of the time, which is a career high. However, he is walking more than ever in his career as well.
Peralta hit .248/.316/.460 with 110 wRC+, 12 home runs, 19 doubles, and 41 RBI this season. He would secure an outside spot for the Rays after they lost Kevin Kiermaier and Manuel Margot, and witnessed Josh Lowe struggle. Peralta cannot hit the left throw at all but can control the right throw. Against RHP, the Peralta hit .267/.325/.498. This is above average and will help Tampa increase its attacking tackle in the long-term critical games.
He is unable to stay against the left but can play in any corner of the field. He’s won the Golden Glove and Silver Slugger before. Overall, this is an A+ deal for the Rays because they needed a racket that could mash the right throw and play on the field. Now, they will be looking for a hunter and perhaps some more promotion as they seek to establish themselves in a wild spot against Blue Jays, Orioles, White Sox, Guardians and Mariners.
As for the Diamondbacks, they have achieved their goals of being younger, unlocking more playing time, sending Peralta to a place that can press for the playoffs, and getting a player They wanted for a while.
The Diamondbacks took hold of the prospect of catching Christian Cerda. Cerda wasn’t listed among Rays’ top prospects, but that’s mainly due to the fact that he’s 19 years old and at the junior level in Florida. He has done well this year. Cerda’s defense is also interesting because he threw 38 out of the 70 runners who tried to steal. It’s not a name you’d expect to hear more about in the next few years because of his age and level. However, he definitely has MLB-caliber expectations if he can keep hitting. The offensive catcher is always valuable.
They lost to Peralta’s stings, but the Dbacks can now allow their prospects to have more playing time like Jake McCarthy or Cooper Hummel. Perhaps they’ll call potential #1 Corbin Carroll or Dominic Fletcher. The D’Backs youth movement is going very well. This could take the rays out of the Juan Soto lottery – perhaps.
