On Monday, NFL Disciplinary Officer Sue L. Robinson reached a decision regarding the punishment of Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson, who has been charged with sexual assault and misconduct by several women. Robinson concluded that Watson should receive a six-game suspension without pay, but did not mention any fine.
Hours after the fall of the report and Robinson’s explanation of 16 pages Browns owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam released the following statement, saying that Watson “regrets that this situation has caused so much grief to so many.”
ESPN analyst Field Yates disputed the statement, noting that Watson last spoke to the media on June 14, where the quarterback denied assaulting or harassing anyone. “At what point did he express any general remorse?” asked Yates.

Some have ridiculed Robinson’s decision to recommend a six-game suspension, especially with the wording used in its conclusion. Judgment says:
“Although this is the most significant penalty ever imposed on an NFL player for allegations of nonviolent sexual conduct, Mr Watson’s pattern of behavior is more egregious than any penalty previously reviewed by the NFL.” .”
Watson faced criminal charges brought by 10 women, but two grand juries chose not to indict him. He faced 24 civil lawsuits from massage therapists, and settled in 23 of them, three of which occurred this past Sunday.
The New York Times Report He noted that Watson received massages from 66 different women in a 17-month period from 2019 through 2021. This report also contains accounts from some therapists who explained Watson’s behavior during the sessions.
Brown traded with Watson, and they signed him to a fully guaranteed five-year contract worth $230 million. Given the contract setup, he is set to forfeit only $345,000 in wages for the six games he missed, as his base salary for the 2022 season was $1.035 million.
This situation is far from over, as the NFL can choose to appeal the recommendation and seek a greater suspension. The league, Robinson wrote in her ruling, was seeking a suspension for at least a full season.
The NFL has until 9 a.m. ET Thursday, August 4th to resume.
