Conor McGregor is back to tease his retirement from MMA again

Once again, in an event that has happened four times now in the past six years, Conor McGregor claims to have been hanging out MMA gloves. Is it actually for good this time?

As The Talking Heads once sang, “As always. Same as ever.”

Conor McGregor has decided once again to open his Twitter app and try to create some excitement in the MMA world by announcing that he is done with the sport… or is he?

The former UFC Second Division Champion sent out a tweet around 5 p.m. ET on August 4 to offer his thanks for the sport he’s helped take to another level. It sounded like a message that he would never enter the cage again.

Just 42 minutes later, McGregor posted another tweet, saying “I won’t leave him, Jack!” Quote from 1997 Titanic Movie. This tweet, along with the other one, now has the MMA world view this as near-immediate discomfort or just plain confusion.

Conor McGregor sent conflicting signals as he teased another mixed martial arts retirement, but apparently unresolved 42 minutes later

This isn’t the first time McGregor has announced his retirement from the appraiser via social media. In 2016, McGregor announced his retirement from MMA after getting into hot water with UFC President Dana White and promoting not to show a media event in the lead-up to his rematch with Nate Diaz.

He won’t retire until one day later.

The second retirement came in March 2019, during a period in which the Nevada State Athletic Commission suspended post-fight events at UFC 229 with Khabib Nurmagomedov.

This retirement, which lasted just over a week, will spark more controversy as it kicks off an eventful year for McGregor, who has run into legal trouble over sexual assault allegations, smashed a fan’s phone and punched an elderly man in a bar.

The third retirement came in June 2020, as he posted his tweet immediately after UFC 250. At the time, the UFC was having problems negotiating with many of its top stars, including Jorge Masvidal and Jon Jones.

McGregor has not been seen in the UFC since he broke his leg and lost to Dustin Poirier in a three-way match at UFC 264 in July 2021.
