The New York Mets are playing well but they still had some issues building their roster.

The New York Mets have been a great team all season. They have the second best record in the entire sport at 73-40 and have been better lately. They have won 15 of the last 18 matches.

This is partly due to some good additions being made in the trade deadline to first base/DH baseman Daniel Vogelbach, defensive back Tyler Naquin, first baseman/defender Darin Ruf and loyalist Mychal Givens. Their biggest acquisition was Jacob Degrom. DeGrom hasn’t been healthy in over a year, but finally came back on his August 2nd comeback (coincidentally, trade deadline day) and has been great on his start ever since.

However, their list building can need some improvement. There are three moves the Mets can still make that will boost their chances of getting to and winning the World Championship.

Mets: 3 moves on the roster to help their World Championship chances

1) Summon catcher Francisco Alvarez

The Mets didn’t have a strong legion to catch the attack this year. They have wRC+57 on the season, the fourth lowest in the sport at this position. Defensively Tomás Nido was great (4 defensive rounds saved, 3 framing turns for the Catcher). James McCann (who has been injured most of the season) is very similar, with his racket being well below average but his defense being good. However, their catchers generally have an fWAR of 0.4, which is 22nd in baseball, so there is plenty of room for improvement. The Mets could have addressed this problem by calling on Francisco Alvarez.

Alvarez is MLB.com’s #1 Overall Potential He is in Triple-A for the Mets. This season, the 20-year-old catcher split the season between Double-A and Triple-A. He’s played in 24 Triple-A games and although he’s not average, he has a good percentage on base and a cooldown percentage. He hit .190/.346/.417 with five home runs, 18 RBI, and four doubles. In 67 games in Double-A, he’s hitting .277/ .368/ .553 with 18 home runs and 47 RBI.

As is currently the case, Alvarez would be the perfect compliment to Nido or McCann behind the plate.
