Lizzie McGuire It was one of the first roles of Disney Channel star Hilary Duff. The show centered around Lizzie, a pre-teen girl who goes through the trials and tribulations of middle school. Duff, who is currently starring in the original Hulu movie How did you meet your fatherIt was the perfect portrayal of an awkward but cute girl in the early 2000s – and I was obsessed.
I had had Lizzie McGuire Folding chair, A Lizzie McGuire Beach towel, many Lizzie McGuire Clothes, and even she had Lizzie McGuire– A themed birthday party, so it’s safe to say the show was instrumental in my childhood.
I had to revisit the series as an adult to determine if the Disney Channel show was as good as I remembered it. This is what I thought:
Lizzie McGuire’s inner cartoon monologue ran so Fleabag could run
Lizzie shares her deepest thoughts and feelings via a large cartoon version of herself. This cartoon is the reason I walked around my house as a kid, talking to myself as if there was a camera crew following me.
In my opinion, the cartoon character Lizzy laid the foundation for the fourth wall breaks we see on TV today – just like the titular character in the Amazon Prime Original in Phoebe Waller Bridge, Fleabag. Both characters have the opportunity to address the audience without spilling the beans on the characters around them, and both exude the main character’s energy.
Platonic friendships are underrated
It is very important for children to understand that platonic friendships exist, which is why I loved the friendship between Lizzie, Miranda and Gordo. The trio navigate middle school together, supporting each other through the ups and downs of being teenagers.
You’ll understand why I was so disappointed when I realized that the show tried to create a romantic relationship between Lizzie and Gordo during season two. It undermines the friendship they had all along, which means Gordo’s friendship with Lizzie only existed because of his hidden feelings for her.
Rhythmic gymnastics skills Lizzie
In the first season of the “You’ve Got My Rhythm” episode, Lizzie decides to train to become a rhythmic gymnast. Her skills impress all her classmates, including her friend/bully Kate Sanders. Her routine should be like that truly right?
wrong – wrong – wronged I practically took off spitting when Lizzie’s bar routine started. Hilary Duff seems to have some experience with gymnastics, which she showed along the way 2004 interview day Late Night with Conan O’Brien— but based on this demo, I’m not sure that Lizzie’s rhythmic gymnastics routine fully reflects Duff’s realistic abilities. On the show, Lizzie big routine It earns a near perfect result.
When Lizzie released this hoop into the air, she lost it. She blows this thing into the crowd, and Larry Tudman holds it right above her head in the next shot. I can’t believe I used to think this is what rhythmic gymnastics looks like.
Ethan was the original Himpo
The Himbo: An attractive guy that looks almost like a golden retriever and is not very smart but has a huge heart. This is Ethan Kraft in a nutshell.
Lizzie, Miranda, and Kate all have crushes on Ethan, which makes sense. Cute, athletic, and popular, he’s basically everything any 13-year-old could want in a boyfriend. Despite Ethan’s popularity with girls in his grade, he’s proven time and time again that he’s a really nice guy.
Ethan gets a Steve Harrington Eski bow in Lizzie McGuire, where the writers originally painted him as a bully, but they quickly transformed him into a lovable doll. The actor who played Ethan shared an interview from the inside That people keep getting close to him to ask if he’s really that stupid in real life, so he obviously hit the nail on the head with his portrayal of Ethan.
Episode with Miranda’s Eating Disorder
Lizzie McGuire She attempted to tackle an uncharacteristically heavy topic in the season 2 episode “Inner Beauty,” in which Miranda begins showing signs of an eating disorder after seeing a photo of her that she finds unpleasant.
It’s a rather dark topic for the kids’ show, but they actually got a lot of basic things right. Miranda has body dysmorphia, so while she doesn’t look that different from her friends, she thinks she needs to stop eating to achieve her perfect body. Miranda also shares with her friends that with so many aspects of her life out of her control, food was the only thing she could decide for herself.
We also see Lizzie turning to her mother for help when she realizes that she can’t help Miranda on her own. 20 minute loop, Lizzie McGuire He did a surprisingly good job of teaching children the warning signs of eating disorders.
Lizzie McGuire only had two seasons
Lizzie McGuire It only aired for two seasons from 2001 to 2004, which was a good benchmark for similar Disney Channel shows at the time. So… why do I remember the show as a long-running powerhouse for the Disney Channel when it only aired for two years?
I think the legacy Lizzie McGuire It can be attributed to the general feeling of being a teenager. Kids can watch the show today and learn about just about everything Lizzie and her friends go through, except for a few curly hairstyles. I remember Lizzie McGuire An important part of my childhood because it was. Even when the show was only airing reruns, I could sympathize with Lizzie because I was still struggling with the things she was going through.
14-year-olds should not be allowed to explore Rome without supervision
Uh, Lizzie McGuire movieA feature film that was meant to serve as the conclusion to Lizzie’s story, in which a group of eighth-graders circle around Rome under the supervision of one escort.
Don’t get me wrong, Lizzie McGuire movie It’s a piece of art in the early 2000s. Riding around Europe on a Vespa with a hot pop star became my dream, and I definitely tried Lizzie’s hair dryer trick to fake a fever back in the day. I just can’t get over the fact that this plot—complete with romance, modeling parties, and full-on pop parties—was supposed to be about a girl who didn’t even start high school.
despite, The anthem was “What dreams are made of” from my childhood. the words. fashion. place. They are all perfect.
It was really embarrassing to see you with your parents
Lizzie has always been terrified of her parents in Lizzie McGuire. On re-watching, I was expected to think Lizzie was just too dramatic, or too harsh on her parents – but surprisingly, I actually relate to Lizzie more in the past.
One of the things I love Lizzie McGuire It is a depiction of how the smallest things seemed so important in middle school. When you’re young and haven’t experienced being an adult, it’s easy to feel that one general misstep is the most devastating thing that can happen to you. Lizzie wants to be seen as cool and independent, so seeing her in public shopping with her mom is the most embarrassing thing you could possibly imagine.
Lizzie’s parents are cute and caring, but I remember feeling embarrassed by my parents when I was in middle school. Like Lizzie, I can remember feeling ashamed to my core when my parents wouldn’t let me go to unsupported birthday parties or star in PG-13 movies. But when you’re 13, these little things are really the most devastating things that have ever happened to you (at least in my case and Lizzie’s – we’ve lived a very quiet life).
