The Pittsburgh Steelers didn’t want to hand Kenny Beckett his first quarterback job as a rookie, but he might be about to earn it.
As if Pittsburgh Steelers fans needed anything else to make Kenny Pickett’s massive train move faster, the first-round rookie exited on his pre-season debut with a stunning performance that saw him go 13 of 15 for 95 yards and two touchdowns, including leading a campaign Win the game and pay the green light for Tyler Foggins.
However, head coach Mike Tomlin has been steadfast in his position that Beckett should win the main task over Mitch Trubisky and Mason Rudolph in pre-season training camp. This performance would certainly help his cause, but since it was listed as QB3 on the depth-first chart prior to this debut, I felt there was still work to be done.
But perhaps not as much work remains as we thought.
Steelers: Will Kenny Beckett lead the QB fight?
During Tuesday’s training, ESPN’s Brooke Pryor noted that Beckett was running with the first team attack during the two-minute practice sessions, although it’s worth noting that Trubisky got a day off from training.
Trubisky’s exit for the day may be the reason why Pickett runs with 1s in this exercise, but the fact of the matter is that the novice is moving his way up the hierarchy. It’s also out of the question that Tomlin would want to see him in the first-team attack with Trubisky not playing on Tuesday to see how well the first-round pick is ready.
Nothing is certain about the Steelers quarterback’s battle yet, and it’s certainly worth bearing in mind that Beckett struggled early on in training camp. But while that’s all true, there’s a reason he picked the organization in the first round, and now we’re starting to see signs that he’s getting closer and closer to being QB1 when the regular season opener comes along.
And if we’re betting on whether that’s the case, all indications lead me to believe that Kenny Beckett will be the Steelers quarterback in week one.
