When the Carolina Panthers play their second preseason game, they won’t have Baker Mayfield or Sam Darnold under center, and instead go with a surprise.
The Carolina Panthers are playing an unnecessary guessing game about who will be the main quarterback all summer long. They are not finished yet.
While reports suggest that the newly acquired Baker Mayfield will be the start – it will be, that has been clear from the moment the trade went down – there has been no official announcement from head coach Matt Rowley. However, Mayfield started Carolina’s first preliminary game last week against the Washington captains.
Baker Mayfield won’t start on Friday night for Carolina Panthers fans
Then, in a surprising plot Friday night, the Panthers announced that neither Mayfield nor last year’s player, Sam Darnold, would start against the New England Patriots. Instead, PJ Walker will be suspended in 2021, with third-round rookie selected Matt Corral serving the rest of the time.
If you’re wondering why leopards do this, you’re not alone. It’s not like Mayfield couldn’t use work with his new teammates, or Darnold couldn’t use work, period. However, Rhule clearly feels the actors are more valuable to Walker and Coral, who are battling for third and fourth places on the depth chart.
Regardless, Carolina has until 9/11 to officially name her tenor and then play the Cleveland Browns. Assuming it’s Mayfield, it could be one of the revenge games ever, as the former first player saw his first team in his opening match for the Panthers.
