A photo of Aaron Donald holding two Cincinnati helmets highlighted a common altercation between the Rams and the Bengals.
Common practices in the NFL are often characterized by brawls between the two teams where competitive sentiments run high. Hell, scramble matches happen all the time between teammates in unshared drills, too.
It is not every day that an all-out brawl erupts quite like that which occurred on Thursday between rams and Bengals.
Aaron Donald became the focal point of it all when video emerged of a Rams defensive lineman swinging not one, but two Bengals helmets down into a crowd of players before being pushed.
Aaron Donald hits the Bengals with their helmets in an altercation
According to Sarah Barshop of ESPNDonald was scheduled to appear in front of the media but it didn’t happen after all the chaos.
Bengals coach Zack Taylor spoke to the media afterwards and described it as “emotions that run high”.
He didn’t make quite a bit of a swing at Donald’s helmet.
“You just want to make sure everyone is healthy and I think everyone is healthy, so we’re going to move on,” Taylor said.
The images are stunning and it would be tempting to look at it as another piece of Donald’s lore. But it’s also unacceptable behavior for a veteran and future Hall of Famer.
Miles Garrett has been suspended for six matches for swinging a helmet against an opponent during a match. What happens in practice will always be taken less seriously. However, the work is equally dangerous both on the training ground and on the field.
There isn’t much precedent for something like this happening during practice, so we’ll have to wait and see if the NFL steps in to issue any kind of punishment.
