The Knicks’ biggest competition just came out

The latest trade rumors for Donovan Mitchell indicate a shrinking field for the Utah Jazz guard.

After Kevin Durant announced his intention to continue with the Brooklyn Nets, all eyes in the commercial market turned toward the Utah Jazz and Donovan Mitchell, the next best available superstar.

Mitchell has been linked with the New York Knicks seemingly all out of the season, with other teams hinting at as well.

Shortly after Durant’s position ended, SNY’s Ian Begley reported that the Cleveland Cavaliers were one of the bands that had recently inquired with jazz and opened a discussion centered on Mitchell.

Well, once that developed, it was all undone for these two teams.

Cleveland Cavaliers exit Donovan Mitchell business talks

The Cavaliers came out, a few days after opening business talks with Jazz. Begley followed up on the Cleveland team news, informing them that they have now concluded discussions with Utah:

The Cavs should have been considered the main opponent of the Knicks in pursuit of Mitchell. Mitchell’s other coveted destinations – Curling and Heat – face significant obstacles that must be overcome to land him. Brooklyn can’t list both Mitchell and Ben Simmons, and the Heat doesn’t have as much flexibility to fit the package Utah wants.

Cleveland had a lot of small pieces that could be tweaked within a deal without sacrificing talent on the team. Just like the Knicks, there were a lot of directions that agreement between these two teams could have gone.

Cleveland’s exit from the trade talks indicates that Utah is imposing strict limits on its prices. Knicks and Jazz reportedly stopped talking about Mitchell for a while before recently restarting trade talks. The state of Utah turned down an offer that included Evan Fournier, Obi Tobin, and the stills soldiers. One has to assume that Jazz’s goal in all of this is to get RJ Barrett.

It will be interesting to see how the discussions go now that the market has made a smaller team for Mitchell.
