Tough decision for Jimmy Garoppolo with the Seahawks looming

With the deadline for the NFL’s 52-player roster and other factors looming, the 49ers are feeling the pressure regarding their looming decision by Jimmy Garoppolo.

How much is the win Deserves In the NFL? There are a number of ways an NFL general manager could interpret it, but John Lynch’s decision-making break-even number this is The week could be $12.25 million.

That number is half the total cover space the San Fransisco 49ers would have saved if they cut Jimmy Garoppolo before tomorrow’s 52-man roster deadline, which arrives at 4 p.m. ET. As of now, though, the only team that appears to be currently interested in trading for Jimmy G is the Niners’ rival Seattle Seahawks. They’ll be playing the Seahawks twice this season as usual, so one could ostensibly say that from a purely commercial standpoint, that’s what deserves to win for this particular decision with such a small group of interested teams.

We know Lynch incorporates this dynamic into his calculus of decision thanks to a report from Jordan Schultz:

49ers need to make a quick decision with Jimmy Garoppolo

The Niners will definitely love moving Garoppolo to get something in return for him now before the cover hits. Despite this, the family of Niners who telegraphed their decision to make Jordan Love QB1 had no leverage. Every team knows that the Niners want to move Garoppolo and that the wisest financial move might be to release him, allowing teams to get his services without having to give up anything in the trade.

The Seahawks may be the only team the Niners can realistically handle (although the Browns come out on top as well, with Deshaun Watson out 11 games due to suspension), making a tough decision. Do you release him and throw the dice at him and he goes to which team but Seahawks? Or do you assume the worst case scenario and take what you can get from Seattle to make sure you don’t go too far without anything to show Jimmy J. Plus Should you meet him twice a year?

After stating that Jimmy G is of no value to them, and strapping their wagon firmly to Trey Lance, it turns out that Garoppolo has enough value that the Niners are in prevention mode when it comes to their final destination.

Perhaps the best plan is to go ahead with the Garoppolo and bite off the cost, after all. On top of that, what if Lance struggled in his first full season as a rookie, or, God forbid, got injured? Are the Niners willing to let him work through the struggles in an experiment with fire?

We’ll see the decision by 4pm tomorrow. Dealing with this situation in San Francisco wasn’t just choreography.
