The Kansas City Chiefs reduced their roster to 53 players. Here are the three biggest surprises.

The Kansas City Chiefs were very eventful after they were eliminated by the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship game. They’ve lost key players like Tyreek Hill and Tyrann Mathieu but have made a host of additions, like Justin Reid’s safety and JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling’s wide receivers. Not to mention the players selected in this year’s NFL Draft.

But, just like the league’s other 31 teams, The Chiefs had to shrink their roster to 53 players on Tuesday, August 30. With that said, there are going to be some surprising moves being made by the front office and the technical staff.

Here are three of the biggest surprise cuts that Chiefs made this summer.

3. Shake the Cut Coaches: Jermaine Carter, LB

One of the lower free signings was Jermaine Carter with the Kansas City agency at the start of the league year, who joined on a one-year deal worth $1.77 million. The move was obviously to bolster the full-back’s depth, and now he’s gone after a few months in the squad.

Carter spent the first four years of his career with the Carolina Panthers, primarily used on special teams. But last season he got 78% of the defending hits, As per Pro Football reference.

However, Carter couldn’t catch up with Kansas City. Carter played in all three pre-season games, scoring 11 tackles in total.

One would imagine that the team would hold on to him because of his contract. Instead, general manager Brett Fitch decided the team would eat $1.77 million in dead space.
