Netflix Promotes Johnny Manzel Documentary After Manti Te’o Special

Following the success of the Manti Te’o special, Netflix teased a documentary about Johnny Manziel.

With the overwhelming success coming from the Manti Te’o special, Netflix has put a teaser on Twitter, hinting that a documentary about Johnny Manziel is in the works for sports fans everywhere.

While Te’o was the second best defensive player nationally during the 2012 college football season, his story is what made the former Notre Dame midfielder a truly household name. His promising career in the NFL has been largely derailed. As fate would have it, he finished second in the Heisman Cup that same season for Manzel, whose career has also gone awry.

This is the tweet Netflix sent out, indicating that a documentary about Johnny Football is in the works.

Netflix fires up Johnny Manzel documentary on the heels of Manti Te’o special

The 2012 Texas A&M Aggies might not have been quite as good as the 2012 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Championship, but it was an extra special season for Gig Em Nation, though, as it was her first year playing in the SEC. After a narrow weekend loss at home to Florida, Texas A&M finished the season 11-2, including a shock victory over the eventual National Champions: The Alabama Crimson Tide.

This was the game in which the freshman quarterback in Little Red made his mark. His passes that turned into touching the ball were the unforgettable play of the Aggies’ surprise victory over Crimson Tide. Texas A&M University placed fifth in the country that year as Manzel became the first freshman to ever win the Heisman Cup. After that everything started to fall apart for Johnny Football.

While he had great success as a sophomore on the Redshirt, off-the-field concerns led to him being sidelined from the NFL after only two seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Substance abuse and other conditions Manzel’s football career appears to be over before it really began. His rise to prominence and then his fall from grace was unlike anything we’d seen before a college star.

It would be hard to top the Te’o documentary, but Manziel’s entire story needs to be told.
