Momentum Pictures buys ‘To Leslie’ after SXSW debut

Momentum Pictures has bought the North American and UK rights to Michael Morris’ “To Leslie,” a drama with Andrea Riseborough that had its world premiere at this year’s SXSW Film Festival. The film will be released in theaters and at VOD on October 7.

Riseborough begins as a West Texas mom who wins the lottery and drinks it away at the same speed, leaving behind a world of heartbreak. She returns home in the hope of salvation. Riseborough leads a band that includes Academy Award winner Allison Janney (“I, Tonya”), Marc Maron (“Maron”), Owen Teague (“The Stand”), and James Landry Hebert (“Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood”). ”), Andre Royo (“The Wire”) and Stephen Root (“Barry”).

“To Leslie” was written by Ryan Bianco and produced by Claude Dal Fara, Brian Kiddy, Kelsey Law, Sissy Cleary, Philip Wylie, Jason Schumann and Eduardo Cisneros. The film also features a score by multiple Grammy-nominated Linda Perry, cinematography by Larkin Seibel and editing by Chris McCaleb.

When the film debuted at SXSW, critics were quick to praise Riseborough, with some calling it the best work of her career. diverseOwen Gleiberman described Riseborough as “…no less than amazing.” He went on to say, “It doesn’t compromise, it doesn’t hold back, but it doesn’t give the character any kind of fake shine. In every scene, she shows you what Leslie looks like on the outside—the exact level of dissipation, her subtle ‘charm’ and her ostentatious, stoic rage—but she points out. Here’s also what’s going on inside it: the woman he’s drinking covers it with.”
