Twitter reacts to Canelo Alvarez’s 3-0 win against Gennady Golovkin

Everyone in the boxing community seemed to have the same feeling: Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin 3 was a huge disappointment, lackluster, and the judges’ results were appalling

There was no doubt this time who had won the fight between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin – but she was also the most biased, the most bored and easily discouraged.

Alvarez earned an easy unanimous decision on GGG to retain his undisputed middleweight championship.

The opening run between the two was fairly quiet, although Alvarez showed a sense of production by working the punch. This was proven to be the story of the first half of the fight. Alvarez focused on punches and straight strides to the head for six rounds, leading the jig. Meanwhile, Golovkin seemed unable to do anything to respond.

Golovkin tried to stand up and trade with Alvarez in the pocket in the seventh round, but Alvarez moved around the ring and began working on Golovkin’s body.

Golovkin finally started supporting Alvarez in the ninth round, but it was too late Alvarez right-back responded.

However, as Alvarez walked away from winning, the scorecards read 116-112 and 115-113 (x2), indicating that the fight was closer to the two previous fights.

Twitter Reacts to Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennadiy Golovkin III

This third meeting between Alvarez and Golovkin seemed to settle an outcome that did not appear to be finished after their first two encounters.

Their first encounter in September 2017 for most middleweight boxing titles was a very competitive and close bout, which ended in a controversial draw. The fight is famous for the infamous Canelo scorecard 118-110 distributed by Adalaide Byrd.

The rematch for the WBA (Super) and WBC Middleweight titles a year later, which was arguably the best boxing fight of 2018, saw Alvarez win by a slim majority to win titles and give Golovkin his first professional boxing loss.

Since their second fight, Alvarez has racked up more gold in more weight classes, beating the likes of Rocky Fielding, Callum Smith, Avni Yildirim, Billy Joe Saunders and Caleb Plant to become the undisputed middleweight champion.

Alvarez also tried his hand at light heavyweight, defeating Sergei Kovalev in November 2019 for the WBO light heavyweight title but losing the WBA title fight with Dmitri Bevol – which was Alvarez’s second boxing loss.

Alvarez’s only middleweight fight came since his second fight with GGG in May 2019, where he defeated Daniel Jacobs to retain the WBA and WBC titles and win the IBF middleweight title.

Golovkin defeated Steve Rolls in June 2019 before winning the FIFA middleweight title, vacated by Alvarez, in October 2019 with a controversial decision to beat Sergei Derevianchenko. GGG hasn’t fought much since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, but he held the IBF middleweight title against Kamil Szeremeta before stopping Ryota Murata to win the WBA (Super) middleweight title.
