Shakira addresses ‘fictional’ tax fraud allegations

In 2018, the Spanish government charged Shakira with tax evasion, with authorities seeking an eight-year prison sentence for the singer, who has vehemently denied the charges rather than seeking a settlement.

Shakira spoke at length about the accusations for the first time in a new way deer Cover story calling it “false accusations” and claiming she had paid. With the court’s argument that she was a resident of Spain for tax purposes from 2011 to 2014, Shakira refuted the point and said she was “busy fulfilling my professional obligations around the world” and asserted, “As of today, I do not owe to [Spanish government]. ”

“However, even without evidence to support these imaginary claims, as they usually do, they have resorted to a lewd press campaign to try to influence the people, and pressure in the media combined with the threat of reputational damage in order to coerce the settlement of agreements.” “It is well known that Spanish tax authorities do not often do this to celebrities like me (or [Cristiano] Ronaldo, Neymar, [Xabi] Alonso, and many others), this also happens unfairly to the average taxpayer. It’s just their style. But I am confident that I have sufficient evidence to support my case and that justice will prevail in my favour.”

When the case was reported by media around the world in December of 2018, Shakira shared a brief statement about the case through her representatives. Reports that the government was using it as a “scapegoat” to persuade guilty taxpayers to confess their crimes. What followed was a series of court appearances in which the Colombian musician denied the allegations, but in the end, a judge ruled in favor of her trial. In May, Shakira tried to appeal the case, but the court rejected the appeal.

Although she hasn’t released a full studio album since 2017, Shakira has made clear her plans to release music in the near future. She talked about the “full music value of an album” that she plans to share with the audience on her own schedule, “and some songs you’ll hear soon, some of which are collaborative works. Some in English, some in Spanish, and different genres.”

The singer also spoke to Elle about her public split from Spanish soccer star Gerard Pique, with whom she shares two children.

“Oh, it’s really hard to talk about that in person, especially since this is the first time I’m touching this situation in an interview,” she explained. “I’m trying to hide the situation from [my children] as much as I can. It’s really annoying for two kids trying to process their parents’ separation. And sometimes I feel like this is all a bad dream and that I’m going to wake up at some point. But no, it’s real. And the real thing also was the disappointment to see something as sacred and special as I thought was the relationship I had with the father of my children and I saw that turned into something vulgar and cheap by the media.”

In particular, Shakira called on the Spanish press to track down her children “every second, she is being photographed at the school center, or followed by the paparazzi… No matter how things end or how Gerrard and I feel about each other as ex-partners, he is the father of my children.” She also responded to a question about her ex-partner’s new relationship, saying that these details were “in a way too private to share, at least for this very moment — everything is so fresh and so new.”

To make matters worse, the singer’s 91-year-old father had recently fallen ill and had to spend time in the intensive care unit, leading her to conclude “This is probably the darkest hour of my life. But then I think of all those women around the world who Those with hardship, those as bad as mine, as hard as mine, or worse.”
