Deontay Johnson said the quiet part out loud about the Steelers

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Deontay Johnson said the quiet part is loud — his team may be in a rebuilding year.

In replacing Mitch Trubesky with Kenny Pickett, Mike Tomlin admitted (perhaps privately), that the organization’s long-term goals were more important than his team’s short-term success. There’s nothing wrong with that – he’s a supervisor, in fact, and talking to his job security.

Beckett gave the Steelers a spark, which is exactly what Tomlin was striving to achieve. Producer Pitt scored twice on the ground, but also threw three interceptions, in a final loss to the Jets. Given the challenging schedule ahead, it could be a tough season in Steel City.

“It’s clearly a year of rebuilding,” said Deontay Johnson. Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. We can’t use that as an excuse. It doesn’t matter who is in the middle or which position. Our job is to get it done and win matches. That’s what we have to do – win.”

The Steelers in a Year of Rebuilding, by Deontay Johnson

Trubisky was the ultimate game manager in a system built just for that. However, when the Steelers’ defense began to crumble due to injuries to the likes of TJ Watt, Matt Canada had to open the offensive.

Beckett is better suited to that, and at 1-3, Tomlin sees the flaws in his ways. The Steelers’ roof with Trubisky has never been this high. It’s a tough situation for him, and his Pittsburgh teammates have acknowledged it.

It’s hard for him,” Johnson said. “He’s got a lot of things to think about, certain things he’s probably thinking about, I’m sure everyone else is thinking about too.”

Replacing a quarterback mid-season is tough on everyone. After that, bills.

A year of rebuilding is exactly what Pittsburgh needs to know what it has in Beckett, for better or worse. It was time.
