Padres star Juan Soto may be friends with Max Scherzer, but Ramy Mets won’t look at him and Soto is willing to change him when he plays.
Friendships may transcend baseball, but during playoffs, friends must be willing to view each other as enemies. Much is at stake.
So don’t expect ex-teammates Juan Soto and Max Scherzer to be friendly this weekend as the Padres star now faces the Mets pitcher in the NL Wildcard.
Soto allowed reporters to move between him and Scherzer after they got on different sides. They did not speak and did not expect it.
Juan Soto is ready to hit Max Scherzer with a shuffle
“I bet he doesn’t want to talk to me at all. I face him all year round, and he hasn’t even looked at my face. I respect that,” Soto said to all Mark Vinsand. “He doesn’t worry about whether we’re friends or not. …on my way, same thing. I wouldn’t be afraid to mix it up.”
Soto and Scherzer were teammates in Washington from 2018 to 2021 when the bowler was traded to the Dodgers. Soto landed this year in San Diego in a superb deal while Scherzer signed with the Mets at the Offisson.
Scherzer serves in the first game Friday night. Soto will try to do whatever he can to beat him to give Padres the opportunity to irritate the Mets.
If that means pulling the Soto Shuffle, Soto’s signature move meaning getting into the head of a jug, so be it. Be on the lookout for it.
