Louis Cardinals’ third baseman, Nolan Arenado, could pull out at the end of this season. However, he didn’t seem like a man ready to test out a free agency after defeating Wild Card.
Arenado suddenly appears unlikely to withdraw from his contract, which will keep him at St. Louis for another four years, as it is currently built.
The cards are built from the outside covered corner, with Arenado and Paul Goldschmidt as pillars of their success. However, these two players together went 1 for 15 in this stretch.
St. Louis acquired Arenado in a steal in a trade in February of 2021. The organization did so knowing full well that he could pull out of his deal in the 2021 and 2022 seasons. However, it doesn’t look like he will either.
Why does Nolan Arenado withdraw from the Cardinals’ contract?
Arenado was reportedly speaking with fellow players about the training setting in the spring after defeating Cards Wild Card.
Back in September, MLB insider John Heyman hinted that Arenado wouldn’t be withdrawing:
“Even with NL MVP candidate Nolan Arenado planning not to opt out of the Cardinals deal — ‘He will remain a Cardinal,’” says a friend — at least six opt-out picks and player choices for stars will enhance a strong free agent roster and make it special. Heyman Books. “
Arenado will turn 32 in April. If he’s going to roll the dice on getting a new contract, it probably won’t be for the AAV he’s going to get on his current deal. Nolan is set to make $35 million, $35 million, and $32 million for each of the next three seasons. Furthermore, he will gross $42 million before his contract expires in 2027.
Without mainstays like Yadier Molina and Albert Pujols next season, the Arenado is a more important part of the equation than ever.
