The New York Mets thought this might be the year. They won 101 matches. They had staff pitching. They had stars on a list estimated at hundreds of millions of dollars.
Who cares if they flop in the NL East title to the Braves? Interval performance will be the only thing that matters.

Now there’s a competition to see who enjoyed the meltdown the most: Padres, Braves, Phillies or Yankees fans.
How did this happen to New York? Allowing the Braves to sweep them in the penultimate series of the regular season brought down the Mets in the Wild Card Tour. But they should still have the firepower to deal with Padres.
It all started on Friday night with Max Scherzer collapsing and giving up seven innings in a 7-1 loss. On the other hand, Yu Darvish was quite dealing.
Jacob Degrom came to the rescue Saturday to avoid disqualification as the New York fighters unloaded seven runs in San Diego.
They could have used those kicks on Sunday as Padres methodically built their 6-0 lead. New York couldn’t buy a hit against Joe Musgrove, who last laughed despite accusations that he was using an illegal substance during the game.
San Diego gets the Dodgers in the NLDS. The Mets must go home to face a long off season.
